Boxee Adding Blinkbox, iPlayer For European Services

Back in March, paidContent:UK revealed the IPTV service Boxee, after taking new funding, hired Wil Stephens to lead a European push. Now it’s confirmed it’s adding BBC iPlayer and Blinkbox as the first UK on-demand providers to be delivered through the service.

Blinkbox, recently acquired by Tesco, charges for much of its online movies and TV shows, so Blinkbox’s upcoming on-board payments system will likely prove interesting to it. Work on bringing Blinkbox to Boxee won’t begin until September, however.

The BBC doesn’t charge for iPlayer, of course – for it, Boxee is just the umpteenth box on which iPlayer is now carried. In fact, this is a reintroduction to Boxee for iPlayer, which was previously hacked together to work on Boxee but which later stopped working pending a proper upgrade.

Boxee recently added the Headweb movie rental service for users in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. We would anticipate the likes of Lovefilm may be added in the UK, with 4oD and Demand Five also candidate services.

Boxee is opening a London office and plans to make further hires there.
