Contrary to earlier reports suggesting Vodafone as a buyer, Deutsche Telekom will sell its Ya.com internet unit to France Telecom for EUR 320 ($433) million. A Spanish broadband provider, Ya.com boasts over 400,000 customers and an 18 percent share of the national ADSL market. The France Telecom acquisition should bolster its Orange subsidiary’s profile in the fixed-line broadband market in Spain – and therefore probably IPTV as well. The company said the buy consolidates its position as Spain’s number-two player, with over a million customers. Existing Ya.com customers will gain access to Orange’s mobile and internet services. Ya.com already operates its own telephony, VOD and IPTV services. The acquisition cost is less than the EUR 500 million suggested earlier. By means of an exchange, Deutsche Telekon is set to acquire Orange’s Dutch unit. Release.
