Associated Newspapers’ Metro freesheet is trialling a user video sharing site from which contributors can earn an advertising revenue share. MEview lets readers get a whole £1 for every 1,000 views of their video and £0.20 per mobile download – videos come with a 20-second pre-roll ad. The interface is a little annoying in that every video clicked from the front page refreshes at the top of the page rather than on its own page. Newsworthy clips uploaded during this beta phase include Ben Puking and Tilt Your Head.
Metro is also working on MEmusic, a section where artists can upload their tunes to be heard by readers. Tracks can be downloaded at a cost of £0.79, with artists getting a 70 percent cut. It’s a white-label rollout from the boldly named AmazingTunes.com.
