Research: Consumers Cutting Subscription Media In Recession

Bad news for publishers considering switching to pay-for content – at the consumer level, people are already reducing their spend on subscription media, according to a YouGov poll for Callcredit Marketing Solutions (via Guardian.co.uk)…

— 24 percent will cut back on their subs to newspapers and magazines.
— 18 percent are reducing their spend on pay TV packages, another 18 percent is considering canceling.
— 80+ percent consider subscription media a luxury they can forgo.
— 20 percent of those over 65 reckon newspaper and mag subs are a necessity, 23 of them think the same about TV.

In fact, Sky and Virgin sign-ups were still well in Q1. FT.com paying subs also rose 18 percent in H109.
