BBC Trust: Yes, iPlayer Works On Macs Now, Too

Remember those heady days of Summer 2007, when protesters actually took to the streets to oppose the BBC’s new iPlayer’s dependence on Windows? Well, after Erik Huggers took over, those days are now gone…

When the BBC Trust finally approved iPlayer in April that year, it wrote-in a series of six-monthly audits to check for platform neutrality. Now that there’s a web version, as well as a download app in the cross-platform Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE) AIR framework, the trust on Thursday issued a house-keeping note saying iPlayer has now passed its test of working on Windows, Mac and Linux. But I still can’t get it on my wristwatch!

Trustee Diane Coyle: “When we carried out our public value test in 2007, we had an enormous response from the public calling for the iPlayer to be available on all platforms. The trust challenged the executive to implement platform neutrality as soon as possible and held them to account with regular updates. We are very pleased that the executive has now fulfilled this requirement and access to iPlayer is available to a wide variety of computer users.”
