BBC’s Rivera wants to make 2012 digital’s Coronation

On Thursday, the BBC’s Online team held its annual briefing, sharing some of its plans for the year ahead and review of recent developments.

Here is BBC Future Media director Ralph Rivera’s keynote:

“(The Olympics) will be the biggest 19 days in the 15 years of BBC Online. We’re going to make 27 streams available on all four devices.”

“My ambition is to make 2012 for digital what the Coronation was for TV.”

Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 Coronation was a watershed for TV adoption in the UK. The BBC will unveil new online Olympics plans next week.

“iPlayer for iPad is the number one free app for iPads of all time in the UK. It’s the second television, or the personal television, for a lot of folks, in the household.

“The Food product is also very successful on the iPad. It’s the computer of choice for the kitchen.

“In March, iPlayer had eight million requests from connected TVs.”
