Newspaper readership varies widely across Europe. In France, for example, consumption is so low, at 46 percent of French, that the government is subsidising newspaper subscriptions for 200,000 people.
Here, Hogeschool Utrecht journalism professor Piet Bakker has produced this fantastic visualisation to illustrate where’s hot and where’s not for European papers, based on circulation against population.
Read this way, Luxembourg and Scandinavia have the highest circulations per head, while Iceland – trying to emerge from a bank crisis – has the highest consumption of freesheet titles.
