The Press Association newswire is planning to make layoffs from its multimedia operation, we have learned.
paidContent:UK understands several staff are in consultation with the agency on taking redundancy, though an exact number is not known.
A spokesperson confirmed: “We are conducting an internal review of costs in order to deliver the best value to our multimedia customers and that we remain fully committed to the production of multimedia content.”
Started by regional newspaper owners in 1868, Press Association has historically provided text news and data to papers and, later, websites.
But it’s invested heavily, over the last couple of years, in kitting itself out to produce video for news website from clients like Standard.co.uk, Johnston Press, Newsquest, MSN and Virgin Media.
The investment was part of the reason PA’s 2007 operating profit nearly halved to £1.4 million.
