Virgin Media Takes Yahoo oneSearch For New Mobile Portal

OneSearch, one product Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) keeps highlighting despite through its own troubled times, has got another deal. The web-based version of the mobile search app will power search for Virgin Media’s new mobile portal in the UK from December 8. OneSearch already this year inked similar partnerships with T-Mobile, by which Virgin’s own virtual network is supplied, so this was maybe an easy next deal to make. But it won’t extend to the desktop web, where virignmedia.com’s search is Google-powered. The hook-up will come with Yahoo serving up sponsored search results and sponsored listings on the portal by early 2009. OneSearch professes to offer a better mobile search experience than the likes of Google (NSDQ: GOOG), with info from a range of sources shrunk for contextual relevance in the palm, eg. a search for a move title will show its local cinema times and reviews. Yahoo claims it has 80 percent of the UK mobile search market, following similar deals with Orange, OR, 3 and T-Mobile. Virgin Mobile (NYSE: VM) has 4.4 million UK users. Release.
