There’ll be no Spanish inquisition for Monty Python-loving YouTube users. The comedy brand is eschewing the possibility of suing the site, which carries many clips of its classic sketches, and has instead created an official channel there. It’s the kind of partnership that usually means a revenue share for content owners; but, as the channel’s operators say, they’re more concerned with driving traffic to DVD sales…
“For three years, you YouTubers have been ripping us off, taking tens of thousands of our videos and putting them on YouTube. We know who you are, we know where you live and we could come after you in ways too horrible to tell.” Instead, the channel is replacing the rip-offs with official clips, so far 24 of them: “No more of those crap quality videos you’ve been posting. We’re giving you the real thing – HQ videos delivered straight from our vault. But we want something in return. None of your driveling, mindless comments.
