BBC Local: Gloves Are Off As Newspapers Call In Lawyers

Local newspapers are now so intent on scapegoating the proposed increase of video on BBC Local sites for their impending death spiral, they are taking the matter through legal channels. The Newspaper Society (NS) has instructed its lawyers to write to the BBC Trust regulator and Ofcom, seeking a suspension of the trust’s ongoing public value inquiry in to the proposal. It claims the trust “is failing to act in accordance with its charter obligations and its agreement with the secretary of state”.

That’s a serious allegation – one which the NS is making in response to a comment BBC Trust chairman Michael Lyons made at a Broadcasting Press Guild lunch last month: “There
