Nokia will build the community application picked up when it acquired Twango in June directly in to the S60 operating system, in a further indication the leading handset maker is going it alone in the social media space. While the networks themselves strike deals with mobile services from the likes of MySpace, then add them back in to Nokia’s OEM handsets, Nokia said at a Helsinki trade show today community is “really going to be the underlying layer, across everything”, Reuters reports. It’s a further potential collision course with carriers, who seem to favor existing big social sites. In the last few weeks, Nokia announced its own social networking site, Mosh, and Ovi, the brand for its own music store and its own gaming platform. Integrating Twango in to S60 will mean Nokia rolling out an almost-new media-sharing social net on its own Nseries handsets as well as some from LG, Samsung, Panasonic and Lenovo, “enabling it to bring community features faster to a wide range of phones, a company official said” (Reuters).
