French start page Webwag has acquired compatriot mobile widget maker Mobease. Formed by former Google France exec Franck Poisson, Webwag already lets users create custom widgets from any website’s content that can then be added to a NetVibes-like start page; Mobease makes a handset search tool and the “Mobidgets” platform. The integration is designed to take such bitesize chunks of web data onto the mobile handset. Poisson today likened the acquisition to last year’s merger of pay-TV systems Canal+ and TPS, saying it will make iPhone-like web widgets available to mobile customers without the hefty handset price tag.
